The Opportunity
AMD makes the chips that power the AI revolution - and right now, it is one of only two companies on earth that can build the high-end processors that train and run artificial intelligence models at scale. The other is Nvidia, which dominates the market. AMD is the challenger, and it is gaining ground fast, signing deals with some of the biggest names in tech: Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic all plan to use AMD's latest AI chips in their data centers.
The business is genuinely excellent. Revenue has grown from about $4 billion a decade ago to nearly $35 billion last year, and the growth is accelerating as AI spending explodes. AMD has beaten Wall Street's earnings estimates in seven straight quarters, and its newest products - the MI400 series GPUs and Helios rackscale servers - position it to capture an even larger slice of the AI infrastructure market. CEO Lisa Su is widely regarded as one of the best executives in tech, having transformed AMD from a struggling also-ran into a company worth nearly $800 billion.
The problem is the price. At $485 per share, AMD's stock already reflects an extraordinary amount of optimism. Investors are paying 158 times last year's earnings and nearly 40 times what analysts expect next year. For the stock to be a good investment from here, AMD would need to grow earnings by something like 50-60% annually for the next five years - essentially a perfect execution scenario where every product launch hits, every customer relationship deepens, and Nvidia fails to defend its turf effectively. That is a very tall order.
What could go right: AMD's new chips genuinely compete with Nvidia's best, the software ecosystem (ROCm) matures enough that customers feel comfortable standardizing on AMD, and the AI infrastructure build-out lasts longer and grows larger than anyone expects. In that world, AMD's earnings could grow into today's stock price and beyond. What could go wrong: Nvidia cuts prices to protect share (it has enormous margin room to do so), hyperscale customers build their own custom chips instead of buying from AMD, or the AI investment cycle hits a pause as companies struggle to monetize their AI spending. U.S. export controls could also tighten further, cutting off the Chinese market that still accounts for roughly a fifth of AMD's revenue.
The bottom line: AMD is a world-class company, but the stock price already assumes it will become dramatically more profitable over the next several years. By traditional valuation measures, the shares appear substantially overpriced relative to the company's current earnings power. For patient investors who believe AI spending will continue accelerating and AMD will keep gaining share, the stock could work - but there is very little margin of safety at today's price.
How we got to $183 - $213
Breakdown
AMD's balance sheet at Q4 2025 shows $76.93B in total assets against $13.93B in total liabilities, yielding $63.0B in book equity ($39.55/share). However, the vast majority of those assets are intangible. AMD's acquisition of Xilinx (~$49B in 2022) and ZT Systems ($4.4B in 2025) [AMD Completes Acquisition of ZT Systems, Data Center Dynamics, 2025] loaded the balance sheet with goodwill and intangible assets that likely exceed $50B.
The tangible asset base is far thinner: cash of $5.54B, modest PP&E for a fabless company, and working capital. Total debt is only $3.22B ($874M current + $2.35B long-term), yielding a D/E of just 0.05 - exceptionally clean. The current ratio of 2.72 and quick ratio of 1.96 indicate robust liquidity.
However, the real fair-value question is whether $50B+ in acquired intangibles will generate returns justifying their carrying value. The Xilinx FPGA business has been slower to monetize than anticipated (embedded segment revenue declined meaningfully in 2023-2024), while ZT Systems' design capabilities are just beginning to contribute through the Helios rackscale platform. At estimated fair value, I would haircut goodwill/intangibles by 15-25%, bringing tangible book closer to $20-25/share.
The NAV model's $38.64/share is a reasonable floor if intangibles hold, but the liquidation value of $7.99 reflects the harsh reality that most of AMD's book value evaporates in a distressed scenario.
AMD generated $8.57B in free cash flow on $34.64B revenue in FY2025, a 24.8% FCF margin - solid for a fabless semiconductor company. Capital allocation has been heavily weighted toward growth investment, with no dividends paid (0% payout ratio) and significant M&A activity. This is still well above the growth rate embedded in most traditional valuation models, explaining why those models produce values far below the current stock price.
AMD possesses a narrow and widening moat built on several pillars. First, x86 architectural licensing creates a duopoly with Intel in server CPUs - there are effectively only two suppliers of x86 processors, creating significant switching costs for enterprise customers with decades of software ecosystem investment. Second, AMD's chiplet design philosophy and advanced packaging (leveraging TSMC's leading process nodes) provide a cost and performance advantage that is difficult to replicate.
